External Wall Insulation
Most houses in England are built using cavity walls and can have cavity wall insulation. But, around 1 in 4 homes do not have a cavity wall and are classed as
'solid wall' homes.
Most properties built before 1930 are built with solid walls and many homes in the south west were built after the war using
'non-traditional' methods such as poured concrete, concrete panel, pre-fabricated e.g. Cornish Units, Woolaway bungalows.
If you live in one of these homes, you could be losing up to 45% of your heat through the walls.
When it comes to energy saving, the Government likes to call these properties
- 'hard to treat' homes. In fact, they are not hard to treat but just need a different approach.
All of these types of properties can be insulated using External Wall Insulation.
External wall insulation systems all work in a similar way and are made up by :
- An insulation layer of mineral wool or a type of specialist foam is fixed to the existing wall
- A reinforcing layer of render is applied
- A decorative finish layer - this can be an acrylic, silicone, render or other finish. You can even get a finish that looks like bricks
External insulation will also update the outward appearance of your property
External insulation should be fitted by a specialist contractor and use certified and approved materials and system.
Grants are also available but do vary depending on the type of property, heating type and availability.
